KAMPALA – The Jamaican-born singer Orville
Burrell, better known as Shaggy, is in town.

Shaggy | Shaggy arrived at
Entebbe International Airport on a British Airways flight at 9:10 a.m.
with an entourage of 20 people.
The entourage
includes artistes such as Rayvon, Rikrok, Brian, Tony Gold and his manager
Robert Livingstone.
Shaggy was
later driven to Speke Resort Munyonyo where he addressed a media
conference.
He will hold
two shows at the same venue on December 31 and New Year’s Day. Shaggy, who
was sporting a grey T-shirt, blue denim pants and black and white striped
trainers, promised Ugandans a great performance.
“We are not
going to short change Ugandans,” he said.
“We expect a
good audience and the energy is going to be pretty high. We are going to
do songs from the old catalogue and new songs as well.”
He dismissed
claims that his 2002 album, Lucky Day, contained derogatory references to
women and sex.
“Well, there
is nothing wrong with women and sex,” he said.
“To the
contrary, Lucky Day celebrates women and their sexuality. But I have songs
that touch different subjects.”
He said he
does not sing about political and religious issues because everyone seemed
to have an opinion about them.
“I am here to
entertain. I do not think people come to concerts to listen to depressing
things so I will not sing anything to do with politics and religious
issues,” he added.
Shaggy also
commented about his time as a marine in Iraq during Operation Desert
Storm.
“1991 was
pretty rough. I pray for peace and no more war because losing a son is a
big casualty,” he said.
Speaking
about his family life, the American-based musician said he has children
but he is not married.
“I’m not
married; I’m Mr Lover for God’s sake,” he said.
Event
organiser Charlie Lubega said that having Rayvon, Rikrok, Brian and Tony
Gold would be like having four concerts in one.
They will be
complemented by an array of local artistes and an impressive fireworks
display at midnight. The Shaggy Boombastic tour is sponsored by Mango,
Club beer, WBS TV, Protector condom and Speke Resort
Munyonyo. |
